The grass is definitely greener in front
of the
Rosemead Chamber of Commerce and
there isn't even any actual grass in
this showcase garden!
Members
California American Water Company
and
Mariposa Horticultural have inspired
local businesses and residents by
installing a beautiful example of a
water saving sustainable front yard area
at the chamber's downtown location that
demonstrates just how much all of us can
act to conserve one of California's most
precious resources while
lowering maintenance costs in the
process!

Through the generosity of California
America Water Company and Garry Hofer,
the Rosemead Chamber of Commerce
recently received a new beautifully
designed and landscaped water
conservation front yard and garden. The
completed demonstration garden includes
a number of low-water-use plants and
shrubs that are beautiful, and require
less irrigation and minimal maintenance
compared to a traditional lawn.
"This wonderful project will help teach
residents about the importance of local
water supplies", said Jose Hinojos,
Rosemead Chamber of Commerce President.
"I want to thank California American
Water for its leadership and support of
the Chamber. Landscaping with
low-water-using, California-friendly
plants is an example of how residents
can easily save our most precious
resource."

Mariposa Horticulture, also a member of
the Chamber, was contracted thru
California American Water to do the
landscaping. The project only took three
days to finish and makes such a
wonderful difference in the look of the
Chamber.
Thyda Tith, California American Water's
conservation specialist designed the
garden. "Drought tolerant landscaping
is a practical and easy way to enjoy
plants that will thrive in your garden
with less maintenance and watering,"
said Tith. "A myth persists that water
conservation gardens are stark and
unappealing. This is not true. The
plants selected for the Chamber garden
showcase include the variety of plant
colors and textures available for
low-water gardening".

"Up to 60 percent of all residential
water is used on outdoor irrigation
throughout the state," said Garry Hofer,
California American Water's Los Angeles
operations manager. "This water-wise
garden, located in a high-visibility
area near city hall and the public
library, is a template for our customers
on how to lessen their water use. I
encourage people to stop by and take a
look, in hopes that they will consider
a
California-friendly garden in lieu of a
large lawn."
