Recently the Fremont
Chamber has seen their
economy in the world news because
Toyota and
Tesla Motors have joined together to
manufacture the Tesla Model
S at the NUMMI plant which just closed
down. Losing the employment that auto
manufacturing facility has delivered for so
many years was a heavy blow to the
California economy.

Tesla projects 1000 jobs will be developed
there as the process for bringing the much
anticipated long range electric vehicle
enters the production stage in 2012.
For the week of May 17th, 2010, this put
Fremont in the spotlight worldwide.
One week later, Fremont has once again
demonstrated another local business and
chamber member has what it takes to produce
sustainable green jobs..... to a
level that attracted President Obama to stop
by to highlight their accomplishments.
President Obama paid a visit on Wednesday
(5/26/2010), to Fremont - based
Solyndra,
a manufacturer of cylindrically shaped solar
panels. A little over a year ago, the U.S.
Department of Energy
extended to the
company a $535 million federal
loan guarantee, funded via the American
Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Perhaps the President was checking in on
operations to make sure all is running
smoothly...
According to Press Secretary Robert Gibbs,
Obama visited Solyndra's Fremont,
California
solar-panel manufacturing plant
to speak with workers about jobs and the
economy.
Solyndra designs and manufactures
photovoltaic systems, comprised of panels
and mounting hardware, for the commercial
rooftop market. Solyndra employs high volume
manufacturing based on proven technologies
and processes to meet the needs of the
global solar market. Using proprietary
cylindrical modules and thin-film
technology, Solyndra systems are designed to
be able to provide the lowest system
installation costs on a per watt basis for
the commercial rooftop market. Founded in
2005 and headquartered in Fremont,
California, Solyndra operates a
state-of-the-art 300,000 square foot highly
automated manufacturing complex.
There are approximately 11 billion square
meters of commercial rooftop area worldwide.
Tapping even a small fraction of this
potential would make a significant impact on
the world's energy needs.

Solyndra designs, manufactures and sells
solar photovoltaic (PV) systems comprised of
panels and mounting hardware for low-slope
commercial rooftops. The Solyndra system is
designed to enhance PV performance on
commercial rooftops by converting more of
the sunlight that strikes the total rooftop
area into electricity.
Solyndra's panels employ cylindrical modules
which capture sunlight across a 360-degree
photovoltaic surface capable of converting
direct, diffuse and reflected sunlight into
electricity. Solyndra's panels achieve
effective energy generation when mounted
horizontally and spaced significantly closer
together than conventional panels on a
typical rooftop, thereby enabling greater
rooftop coverage and enhanced energy
production over the system's lifetime.
The Solyndra system is lightweight and
allows modules to be spaced apart within the
panels so that wind can blow through them,
thus eliminating the need for expensive
mounting hardware and ballast typically
required to secure conventional panels
against uplift from the wind. The horizontal
mounting and unique "air-flow"properties
of Solyndra's solar panel design
substantially simplify the installation
process for Solyndra's PV systems. The ease
of installation and simpler mounting
hardware of the Solyndra system enables its
customers to significantly reduce labor,
hardware, design and other balance of
systems costs, which account for a
substantial portion of the total installed
cost of a conventional PV system.
Using proprietary cylindrical CIGS modules
and thin-film technology, Solyndra systems
are designed to be able to provide the
lowest system installation costs on a per
watt basis for the commercial rooftop
market.
